If you were to survey the average adult, most would tell you that at one point or another they have been on a diet. People go on diets for all sorts of reasons such as preparation for a wedding, meeting sports and athletic goals, looking better in their clothes... and the list goes on. Ultimately, the primary aim of dieting is to lose excess weight. For as many reasons that people go on diets, there are probably just as many diets out there. One excellent, healthy weight loss diet in my book, is the Mediterranean Diet. This diet is very simple to adopt, it does not wreak havoc on the body and it is highly effective in helping people to lose weight.

Key aspects of the Mediterranean Diet:

  • Plant-based foods
  • Fish
  • Occasional consumption of meats (a couple of times per month)
  • Olive oil rather than saturated fats
  • Nuts and Legumes

A healthy weight loss diet is a very good thing and if you are going to lose weight, it is definitely best to do it in a healthy way. Therefore I would never recommend engaging in things like starvation, liquid diets, and other obscure methods of weight loss. Whenever an individual engages in unhealthy weight loss practices, there is a risk of doing serious injury to the body. This is especially true, the older a person gets. What is important to know is that it is possible to lose weight in a healthy way; there is such a thing as a healthy weight loss diet.

    The Mediterranean Diet and Health

The Mediterranean Diet is a well-researched, well-documented way of eating that has been proven to have strong, protective properties. First of all, those that consistently eat a Mediterranean Diet rarely suffer from weight problems. This helps eliminate many of the age-related illnesses that are often brought on by excessive weight. The diet, although it contains fairly high levels of fat, uses fats primarily derived from olive oil and fish which have heart-protective qualities. Additionally, the Mediterranean Diet has been proven to help prevent certain degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

    Plant-Based Foods

The food-types that are included in the Mediterranean Diet are those that are common and popular in the Mediterranean, the region that the diet derives from. However in most countries a person that wants to adopt a healthy weight loss diet such as the Mediterranean Diet needs just to have a strong consciousness about what they are buying whenever they go to the grocery store. The key thing to remember is to purchase plant-based foods; foods that are sold pretty much the same way that they grew on the tree, in the ground or on the bush. Processed foods do not fall under this category. Another key feature of the Mediterranean Diet is that meat is consumed only occasionally such as once every 6 to 8 weeks.

Your healthy weight loss diet can be modeled fully or partially on the Mediterranean Diet. Having said that, once you begin to eat in a healthy, natural way you will most likely recognize its benefits quickly and want to eat that way all of the time. The Mediterranean Diet is a healthy weight loss diet. It is highly effective for weight loss and works best when it is fully adhered to.
